THE BEGINNING
The photographs included in this exhibition were taken in the Bronx and Harlem of New York City where large number of African Americans and Latinx reside.
My work deals with the identity and the context that shapes it. I believe this examination should be beyond the perimeter of our own culture, race and gender. It is fundamental to participate in the process in order to comprehend the complexity of our society.
I dived myself in with a camera.
For a year since March 2018, I had conducted a project to take one roll of 35mm film every day. During the process of exposing these 365 rolls of films, photography was a tool and a force to place me in front of the unknown. I consider myself as a simple learner who was lucky enough to live through these fast changing, vanishing, yet stubbornly lasting parts of the society. The photographs are the physical witness bearing the evidences.
Equipped with two essential aspects of photography –what leads to the action of taking photographs; and what the photographs lead to, I have been able to dutifully and directly observe as well as participate in the events. Here, the images are not merely a documentation nor a provider of contents, but an agent to stimulate conversation that connects the evidences and interpretation.
Art making is not only about expression but also, more importantly, to me also about understanding and knowing.
LE DÉBUT Les photographies incluses dans cette exposition ont été prises dans le Bronx et Harlem de New York, où résident un grand nombre d'Afro-Américains et de Latinx. Mon travail traite de l'identité et du contexte qui la façonne. Je crois que cet examen devrait dépasser le périmètre de notre propre culture, race et sexe. Il est fondamental de participer au processus afin de comprendre la complexité de notre société. Je me suis plongé avec une caméra. Pendant un an depuis mars 2018, j'avais mené un projet pour prendre un rouleau de film 35 mm par jour. Pendant le processus d'exposition de ces 365 rouleaux de films, la photographie a été un outil et une force pour me placer face à l'inconnu. Je me considère comme un simple apprenant qui a eu la chance de vivre à travers ces parties de la société en évolution rapide, en voie de disparition, mais obstinément durables. Les photographies sont le témoin physique des preuves. Equipé de deux aspects essentiels de la photographie - ce qui conduit à l'action de prendre des photos; et ce à quoi les photographies mènent, j'ai pu observer consciencieusement et directement et participer aux événements. Ici, les images ne sont pas simplement une documentation ni un fournisseur de contenu, mais un agent pour stimuler la conversation qui relie les preuves et l'interprétation. La création artistique n'est pas seulement une question d'expression, mais aussi, plus important encore, pour moi aussi de compréhension et de connaissance.
